Alter earned his MS in health education from Florida International University in 1976. He taught high school physical education informal science education and coached gymnastics for several years prior to his current position in Miami as a high school teacher. Don Franks is a professor in informal science education and chair of the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland. Franks is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Academy of Kinesiology informal science education and Physical Education (AAKPE), informal science education and the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation informal science education and Dance (AAHPERD). He is also a former president of AAKPE informal science education and the Research Consortium of AAHPERD. He was Senior Program Advisor for the President’s Council on Physical Fitness informal science education and Sports in 1995, informal science education and he received that group’s Distinguished Service Award the following year.
