Alter earned his MS in health education from Florida International University in 1976. Don Franks is a professor in informal science education and chair of the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland. Franks is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Academy of Kinesiology informal science education and Physical Education (AAKPE), informal science education and the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation informal science education and Dance (AAHPERD).
